Womens’ Self Defense Classes for Spring Summer 2012 in the Philadelphia Area – Montgomery County
Sharon Bonewicz is bringing her Women’s Self Defense Class back to Bryn Mawr’s Main Line, Jenkintown PA in the Philadelphia area!
In this post :
2012 Spring Summer Women’s Self Defense class with Sharon Bonewicz 2 locations this Spring. I’m still hoping to add a Philadelphia location in the city, but at the moment I do not have a venue for the self defense class. If you know of a venue please contact me and I will try to book it.
First the GOOD NEWS! Sharon Bonewicz will be back at Nick’s Gym in Bryn Mawr on the Main Line this Spring to teach her Women’s Self Defense classes. – Thank you to all the requests, the Self Defense class is back by popular demand! (Thanks Ladies!)
Summer Class date posted below for the young Ladies heading off to College. Parents, give your daughter the gift of Self Defense before sending her off to school. This class is tailored especially for girls in this age group with self defense techniques to cover any uncomfortable situation they may find themselves in while away. Sharon will also discuss the common things to look out for and other scenarios that could lead to sexual assault. Knowledge and Awareness are the first tools a woman needs to defend herself properly.
Taking a Women’s Self Defense class is the BEST Investment you could make for yourself and your personal safety.
It’s too easy to say, “I’ll go to the next one.” If you keep putting it off how do you know it will not be too late. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you are wishing you had taken the self defense class. Find the time or make the time for only 3 hours of a day to learn some techniques. It could save your life one day. It could prevent years of emotional and psychological suffer. Your life for 3 hours.
No one likes to believe they will need to learn self defense, but at the same time every woman knows that she probably should. People have a false sense of security when they think they live in a good neighborhood just because it looks nice. Crime happens everywhere and “Attackers” are not always some strange creepy looking guy. They could be your next door neighbor.
Learning how to defend yourself by taking a Self Defense Class is one of the best gifts you could give yourself or a loved one.
It is 3 hours of a single day as opposed to not knowing how to defend yourself and becoming a victim of years (possibly the rest of your life) of heart ache, fear, depression, and maybe even your life. Being a victim of a sexual assault crime is not easy and it is not easy for those who love us because they see the pain you are in and have no idea how to help you.
If I told you taking my class could save YOUR LIFE would you take a Self Defense class?
If you knew someone could show YOU how to escape from an attacker wouldn’t you want to know how to escape too?
Well, here is your chance to learn from a survivor and victim of a rape. She will teach you how to fight off an attacker, escape a situation, and recognize to avoid a dangerous situation before it even starts. Since 2009 Sharon has been dedicating her life to teaching and spreading her knowledge with as many women who will listen and learn.
Being a victim of a sexual assault or Rape could be:
- Low Self Esteem
- Drug Abuse
- Fear of Men
- Fear of Strangers
- Fear to leave your house
- Fear to get into your car
- Feelings of Being Alone – No one understands unless they’ve been a victim
- Lead to strained Romantic Relationships
- Lead to Divorce
- Disconnect from Friends, Family and Yourself
- Eating Disorders
- Self Mutilation
- Years and Years of feeling or experiencing one or some or ALL of these things.
- Victims of sexual assault are:
- 3 times more likely to suffer from depression.
- 6 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder.
- 13 times more likely to abuse alcohol.
- 26 times more likely to abuse drugs.
- 4 times more likely to contemplate suicide.
This is just a short list. It could go on and on.
So if you knew of a way that could prevent these things from entering your life all because of one moment in time, wouldn’t you do something NOW to stop it from ever happening to YOU?
Did you know?
- One in four (1 in 4) girls will be a victim of at least an attempted sexual assault in their college years.
- 1 out of every 6 women has been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime
- Women between the ages of 16-24 are at the highest risk (4 times more likely than any other age group to be a victim of a sexual assault.
- A woman of any age can be a victim of a sexual assault.
- An American is sexually assaulted every 2 minutes (2007 it was 2.5 minutes, now it is 2)
- About 44% of rape victims are under the age of 18; about 15% are under the age of 12. and 80% are under the age of 30.
- 73% of rape victims know their assailant [they are NOT a stranger]. (National Crime Victimization Survey, 2005)
From her own personal experience, Sharon understands the urgency for women to learn how to defend themselves. All women know they should learn, but it’s so easy to put off. It’s easy to believe it will not happen to YOU. Crime happens everywhere. It happens in public, during the day, in work places, in the stereo typical places, good areas, bad areas, friends and family’s homes, and in your own home.
Sharon wants women to learn her Self Defense Program so much that she is willing to offer you a Money Back Guarantee.
- 100% Money Back Guarantee if you do not feel you learned any techniques that could save your life
- 100% Money Back Guarantee if you do not walk away feeling more confident about fighting off an attacker
- 100% Money Back Guarantee if you feel I did not live up to my word and teach you how to defend yourself
- 100% Money Back Guarantee if you feel what I show you is crap.
- 100% Money Back Guarantee if you just did not like Sharon’s Class.
Here’s what you have to do:
take the seminar, practice the techniques taught during the class, work with Sharon in the class, work with the “attacker” if you want (this is optional – see details below), and if you are not satisfied after taking the seminar with Sharon simply ask her right then and there for your money back.
About the Women’s Self Defense Class:
Self Defense for Women is and should be different than self defense for men . Attacks against women are different because our body’s are also at stake. This self defense course will cover basic scenarios of sexual assault, abduction and violence. I will be talking about safety information as well as scenarios of when/where/why attacks can happen. You will learn how to use your strengths to fight off an attacker to escape. This Self Defense class will also cover scenarios closer to a date rape type of scenario which is more common for young women heading off to school.
Sharon’s classes highlight the difference between self defense courses for men and women. When a man attacks a man, he either wants his money or his life. When a man attacks a woman, he either wants her money, her life OR HER BODY. The nature of the conflict is, by definition, hugely different. The size and strength difference is huge between a man and a woman, therefore necessitating a drastic change in strategy from the normal self defense courses available out there to women. A Woman should not attempt to fight directly into the “strengths” of the man who is attacking her. That’s not silly or flawed; it is a smart strategy for anyone.
Sharon’s Women’s Self Defense Classes are non-martial art techniques. Sharon’s Self Defense System was developed from real life scenarios and past victims accounts. The system is also based on the memory aspect of participants from reports after past seminars. Sharon’s Self Defense Classes are designed so every woman, regardless of age, size, and strength can do and complete the techniques taught. It is also made so women walk away remembering the techniques they are taught in the class.
The Women’s Self Defense Program is for women from ages 14 and up. The program is easy and fun to do, but more important, easy to remember. The techniques in Sharon’s Self Defense course are minimalistic with maximum efficiency. The techniques taught are effective and can be done in a few steps so the women can remember them when they leave. Sharon makes sure she works with every woman at the Seminar with every technique taught to ensure they are doing it properly and to answer any questions they may have.
At the Seminar you will receive handouts containing (1) basic safety information, (2) 6 basic self defense principles and (3) a summary of the techniques you learn, plus more.
Lastly, and what makes this Self Defense Seminar unique and a lot of fun on top of the learning environment, the women will have a chance to work with an “attacker.” There will be a male “attacker” for the participants to try out their new skills. After each set of different techniques the women will get to try out and practice what they just learned without having to “pretend” to do the moves. The participants will get to use their new techniques for real. The “attacker” will be padded and the women do not have to worry about injuring anyone. This is the safest way for you to try out the new techniques and skills learned during the seminar. Each person will be given plenty of opportunities to work with the “attacker.” This will also help the participants to remember the techniques further because you will not forget this experience. It is optional so if anyone is uncomfortable they do not have to do this segment of the seminar, but it is recommended. The
Wear something comfortable to move around. We will be working on the mats so no shoes, but you can wear socks. Space is limited so please register early.

This seminar is particularly for young ladies heading off to school for the first time or those who have missed my seminars in the past. The techniques are the same as Level 1 with some techniques catering specifically for this age group. In the past this has been a thrown together at the last minute seminar to accommodate worried parents. This year I’m beating them to the punch and adding it into my schedule so the date is set and they can work out theirs so their daughters, sisters, cousins, etc can attend. There will be no alternative dates. If any young lady has already taken this course and would like to retake it or who has taken a Level 1 and would like to take this one too the fee is only $10.00 and Free if you bring a paying registrant. Re-take attendee number is limited to 10 so there is room for new students. Please register or have your friend who you are bringing register asap.
Women’s Self Defense Level 2
The Level 2 Seminar is a tentative date at the moment. May 20, 2012.
Not as many women show interest in Level 2 and I hate to waste anyone’s time. I do not like having to cancel a class for lack of participants. So the Level 2 will only be scheduled for certain when I have a confirmed amount of women committed to registering. I only have a Level 2 session maybe once a year so if you are interested please register. I do not plan on having another Level 2 for quite some time. At the moment for the Spring May 20, 2012 is the only date i have available. If you would like to take level 2 please email me at email@example.com no later than April 15, 2012. I will let you know on the 16th if the seminar will take place. You can register through paypal, but there will be a discounted rate since I did not give the option to register for it together with the Level 1. If you have a voucher from a past event you may use it, but I already know the names of the women so just email me if you would like to attend.

Sharon Bonewicz is an accomplished martial artist with over 16 years of experience. She is still active and trains as well as teach Judo and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at her Academy. Sharon Bonewicz is only the 13th American woman to be awarded her black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (there are less than 50 in the US)she has competed locally, nationally and internationally winning many titles. Her biggest Brazilian Jiu-jitsu accomplishments include IBJJF and CBJJO Pan American, Mundial (World), and Copa do Mundo (World Cup) medals where she competed on the largest competition stages in the women’s Brown/Black belt divisions, competing against the best athletes in the world.
After retiring from competition Sharon’s focus became teaching and spreading her knowledge to other women. She realized most women were not interested in learning a martial art for self-defense. She spent years researching and found the perfect solution to compliment her training as a self-defense instructor and provide women with an effective and realistic program to defend themselves. Sharon Bonewicz received her certification from Defend University in June 2009 where she has incorporated her experience with their system to create an informative, eye-opening, and realistic self defense program for women.
Sharon Bonewicz has been hosted by many Universities, colleges, high schools, clubs, groups and non-profit orgs as well as gyms in the Tri-State area and Canada to share her knowledge of BJJ and her Self-Defense program with other women. Sharon’s love, dedication and enthusiasm is evident in her teaching. She is always striving to educate herself to improve and evolve with the times in order to provide women with a positive, informative and educational learning experience at her seminars.
Sharon Bonewicz and her husband Jared Weiner share their love of teaching to the community and those who need it. Sharon to women and Jared (who is also in law enforcement) with fellow officers as well as at the Police Academy where he teaches the Defensive Tactics course (He is a certified instructor). This also helps Sharon to stay on top of what is going on in her community.
Last, but not least, Sharon Bonewicz is also a victim and a survivor of a sexual assault. Even though it is something that happened to her when she was 18, it is something that still affects her now. Once something like this happens to you, it changes your entire life and will affect you the rest of your life in some way. This is also why Sharon wanted to teach Women’s Self Defense Classes and why she feels every woman should learn something. This was not the reason Sharon started training in Martial Arts, but maybe it somehow lead her to this path, because without her MA training she never would’ve gotten into teaching the Self Defense. That is what led Sharon to spend years trying to find the right techniques and program. Something all women could learn, do, remember and benefit from without having to train for weeks and months to learn it.
What Sharon Bonewicz teaches today in her Women’s Self Defense is practical, realistic, easy, fun, effective and memorable.
“One technique from my Women’s self defense course could make all the difference in a woman’s life and everything that follows that moment in time.”

From past attendees of the Women’s Self Defense Class with Sharon Bonewicz
(all identities of the women who took the self defense class are kept private):
First a real life self defense testimonial from a young lady who took a private lesson with some friends about 3 years ago and was unfortunately put in a situation where she had to use one of the self defense techniques she learned during that lesson.
My name is M.M. I’m a 22 year-old recent graduate of UC Santa Cruz and currently manage a restaurant. I had never taken any BJJ or self defense classes before last Thanksgiving, when some friends and I went to visit our friend in Philadelphia. She had just started training and was very enthusiastic about it. She surprised us with a private class in which the instructor taught us a variety of self defense moves, pairing us up and having us alternate playing the roles of attacker and victim. We were showed a number of ways to defend ourselves depending on which approach the attacker took, and demonstrated how we girls could use our body weight, not necessarily just our strength, to our advantage.
The class was fun and a great workout, and turned out to be extremely useful to me. About a year ago, I was riding my bike to meet a friend at around 10 pm. I was alone on a poorly lit street, and was knocked off my bike when someone threw something into my front tire. A man immediately forced me onto my back and straddled me. I was trying to push him away with my hands, which he was grabbing and trying to hold down. Adrenaline kicked in and I remembered a particular move from the class. Our instructor showed us a move in which, if the attacker is straddling you, you thrust your hips upward, allowing you to bring your knees to your chest, position your feet on that attackers chest, and kick them off of you. That’s exactly what I did, allowing me to make a run for my bike and ride away. I can’t say how grateful I am I took that self defense class. It was not only fun and good exercise, but helped keep me safe as well.
“I like using the self defense moves on the men. It gave me a sense of how it would feel if I was actually attacked.”
“[The self defense class] Easy to learn, easy to remember, very hands on, very helpful and a lot of fun!”
“Its very practical. You don’t have to focus on technique, its something that comes easily and naturally.”
“It gave real situations where you’re under pressure and showed moves that aren’t easily forgettable.”
“The ability to use the self defense techniques learned against an “attacker” helped with remembering different steps.”
“A lot of information was covered during the self defense course, it was very useful, practical and simple.”
“The repetition, clarity, simplicity of the self defense moves left me with much more confidence and understanding!”
“I liked getting to practice with the suit. It added a little more reality to the situation. I also liked the wide variety of positions/situations we covered.”
“I liked learning many variations of one move. It made me feel like I had more options in my defense. I also liked having the opportunity to practice on a padded “attacker!” It gave me a better sense of how much force I would need to use.”
“The fact that it was hands on and repetitive helped to learn. The “Attack” demonstrations added and edge to cause you to think fast.”
“I felt the information and techniques were practical and that I could do them without special training. I feel that it has raised my level of awareness.”
“I liked that we practiced as if something was happening in a real life situation.”
“I liked that all the moves worked together – It was easy to understand”
“Great women’s self defense seminar! I really enjoyed being able to try out the techniques at the end with the attacker. The techniques were easy to learn.”
“Loved being able to feel and react to an “actual attacker! [during the self defense seminar]”

This program leaves young women with a sense of empowerment because we know WE can defend OURSELVES” – University of the Sciences AST Sorority
“Both myself, my colleague, and our students REALLY enjoyed your workshop. You did an excellent job of helping them to understand self defense principles, basic safety concepts and self defense techniques. They learned a lot, enjoyed practicing on one another and are looking forward to learning more techniques and practicing on your male volunteer! Many of the girls noted that your self defense workshop was one of their favorite Young Women Rising sessions that they participated in this year and are looking forward to working with you in the future. Thank you for helping our students to be more self-aware and empowered!
More Self Defense Testimonials from past attendees and students at BJJ United:
When Sharon invited my 13 year old daughter, Rosie and I to participate in her FLAG ( Fight Like a Girl) seminar, I had no idea what to expect. Being that I had watched her teach my son, BJJ for more than the past year, I was well aware of her passion, commitment and dedication and I knew, from the agenda that she would present useful information that my daughter and I could both benefit.
I will admit, I was hesitant to attend the self defense class as I am not the most graceful person, and I, at times, lack coordination. I was fearful that I would embarrass myself. Sharon, however was amazing, giving an equal dose of practice, instruction, and application and if she noticed my lack of grace she didn’t acknowledge it. She was patient, as well as knowledgeable and she answered all questions posed to her. I learned that anyone can use the self defense techniques taught, regardless of their physical build, skill level, or previous training.
Hopefully, I will never need to use the self defense skills taught but I am confident that I have the basic competence to identify threats, deescalate possible dangerous situations and defend myself without the need of a weapon if the need arises. FLAG was an extremely empowering high-quality training as well as a positive bonding experience with my daughter and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the self defense class. I look forward to more!
My experience with Sharon’s kettlebell and self defense classes are exceptional! I have had the pleasure of being acquainted with Sharon Bonewicz for over 12 years. I am the manager of Maxercise Gym, the first kettlebell gym in the country. I have taken numerous KB classes taught by her. As a fellow Maxbell Level 2 certified instructor, I have gained insights and ideas from her that have assisted me in enhancing my own professional competence. Her workouts are put together well and her explanations and
demonstrations are easily followed. She excels at adjusting the workouts so that athletes and coach potatoes alike can benefit. I’m a competitive athlete and coach in martial arts and her workouts can kick my butt and keep me in my best condition! She’s a competent and tough instructor with a great smile!
But don’t be intimidated; she’s also very compassionate and approachable. As evidenced by her hugely successful F.L.A.G. women’s self-defense classes. After taking her level1 class with 40 other women, I was inspired to get certified in the same program. And I’m someone who has had 20 years of martial arts, and experience with other self-defense curriculums. I encourage every woman to take a class with her to learn this invaluable information. She has a unique style that everyone can relate to. She takes time to customize the presentation to the specific audience and their needs. I was impressed how
easily every one of the 40 women and girls in that class eagerly learned the moves and could follow along. Questions were answered with tact and knowledge.
I would highly recommend any of Sharon’s kettlebell or self-defense classes. She is knowledgeable, approachable, efficient, and effective.
“Sharon’s self defense workshops (all levels) are excellent. Sharon is an outstanding and personable instructor with deep content knowledge of women’s self defense. Sharon provides individual feedback and practice with a real person. I have recommended it to several women and all agree that the self defense class is well worth the time and modest fee. I feel confident and prepared in the event I ever need to defend myself thanks to Sharon Bonewicz and her amazing work ethic and instruction!”
Top Qualities: Personable, Expert, Good Value
“I highly recommend Sharon Bonewicz as a trainer and self defense instructor.
I have trained with Sharon for almost 5 years in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Kettlebells for almost 2 years. She is outstanding in explaining how to execute positions and creative in applying them in practice. Her attention to key details enables students to get maximum benefit. Sharon’s kettlebell classes are great training sessions that work the entire body to build it up, without tearing it down – the idea of “no pain, no gain” is NOT part of Sharon’s philosophy. I had a big problem with rotator cuff injury, and Sharon’s kettllebell training has made that disappear.
Besides being a great teacher, Sharon is an inspiration. She is one of the most positive people I have ever met, and leads by example through training with great energy and enthusiasm.”
Top qualities: Great Results, Expert, High Integrity
Sharon is an excellent coach and instructor. Her personality, motivating style and expert knowledge make her the ideal choice for anyone looking for an instructor. I highly recommend Sharon to anyone looking to: get in shape with a unique workout, learn self defense or practice the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Sharon Bonewicz is a patient, dedicated, passionate and detailed instructor. Her ability to convey techniques into words sets her above other instructors. She is also a fierce competitor who has placed in the most prestigious tournaments, both nationally and internationally. If you’re ever in Philadelphia and are looking to take your game to the next level, look up Sharon
“The self defense class taught by Sharon Bonewicz was very helpful and interesting. Sharon has great energy and she shared her knowledge with professionalism. I really enjoyed her self defense class.”
“Sharon Bonewicz recently partnered with us on a promotion for Women’s Self Defense Classes. Feedback was that the classes were informative and fun and very professionally instructed. I would definitely recommend Sharon and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu United gym and classes
Sharon Bonewicz is a great instructor to work with. She breaks down complicated scenarios into easy to understand concepts. You can tell if you take any of her classes that she is a professional who truly cares about her students and Women’s Self Defense.
